The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to record a new album and change their name with a different producer. The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that all original Toto members Toto were performing together. The band broke up again following this. Toto came back together for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise money for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time all original Toto members appeared performing together for more than 31 years. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

In 2008, Toto decided to take the time off from touring due to a string lineup changes and a disappointing string of releases. However, the group resumed performing in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album marked a return to their best form and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
