Window handles are among the most frequently used components of your double-glazed windows. As time passes, they could become rusted or worn out.

Handle

Over time, uPVC window handles and locks can become damaged due to wear and tear, accidental or intentional damage. The espagnolette style is the most common uPVC window handle. The handle is equipped with an external door handles and locks spindle that is protruding out of the handle. When replacing the uPVC window handle, it's an ideal idea to use screws with cover caps to ensure the screws are secure and shield them from corrosion. Alternately, you can use a washer or spacer to ensure a better seal. A screw cap will prevent debris and water from getting into the handle, causing damage.

After taking the handle out of the window, it's an ideal idea to clean the spindle and the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle fits and works well, and it can also help prevent any dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

Next it's time to install the new uPVC handle. You should carefully read the instructions that came with your new handle and look at your previous one to get a better idea of how it's done. It's also important to note that if you're replacing a uPVC handle with a cockspur (also known as an Espag handle) you will need to examine the step height of the window to determine the proper size of handle. The steps height refers to the distance from the frame or base of the window up to where the nose of the cockspur handle sits when installed.

The hinges may not be aligned with the window frame when windows begin to open and shut with a visible gap. This is usually a simple fix that can be solved by installing a new set of replacement window hinges. The sound of a hinge squeaking could indicate that the hinges need to be replaced. It's typically due to metal friction against metal. If the noise persists then a small amount of lubricant may help.

Plumb windows help avoid optional binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is line with the frame, ensuring that it opens and closes correctly. If a window is not plumb could begin to close and open with difficulty or may get warped over time, creating problems for the seal as well as the appearance of the window.

You can purchase replacement hinges for windows made of upvc in imperial or metric sizes. In general the size in metric is a bit more precise but it isn't noticeable once they are fitted. Crank

If you're unable to secure your window or the multipoint lock is damaged, it may also be worthwhile to consider replacing this piece of hardware too.

It's simple to replace the window crank with little effort. But, it's essential that you purchase the correct size replacement. Make sure that the replacement has the same step in height as the previous one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch on the track across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the length of your spindle on the handle you currently have to determine the size of the replacement.

The type of window handle that you have will determine what kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles have a brain spindle at the back which is attached to the frame of the window and drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles are fitted with pegs which are fixed into the frame by three or four screws that are inserted in the sash as well as the frame.

Once you've found the correct replacement, it's easy to install. First, remove any trim mounting screws that are on the casement cover of your window and carefully lift it up to reveal the insides of your window operator (Photo 1). Remove any rusted trim screws and then check the operating lever to the old to make sure they are in line. Attach the new lever to the window frame. Replace any screws that are damaged or bent. Then, you can place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
