Door handles may seem like something minor, but if you dislike the appearance of the handles or are finding them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. With some patience, you can put in a new handle in no time.

Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that hide the screws to create a stylish appearance. However, you'll need to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't have them attached already.

Take off the handle from the old one.

The door handle is not only a decoration for your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock your door. As time passes the door handle can begin to lose its grip or feel loose. It could also appear worn out and old. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace your door window handle repairs.

One of the first indications that your door handle requires replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious issue as you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door and put your family and yourself at risk.

The first step is to remove the screw holding the latch plate. The screws are usually quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It might be beneficial to get a second person to assist with this part if possible.

The latch plate should easily come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move using a nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this can damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the proper position Try closing and then opening the door to determine whether it latches and closes correctly. If not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door shuts correctly.

If the door is still moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more prevalent in older doors, however it could also be caused by wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or not the right size for the latch, or from a broken or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure as adjusting the strike plate, using an iron file instead of an hammer and chisel.

Remove the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides into and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door closed. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to correct the issue.

The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to locate however, you can put a screwdriver in an insignificant hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.

If the latch doesn't easily come out it is suggested to use an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. You may have to repeat this procedure several times before you can pull the latch out.

After the old latch is removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to move the new latch into the slot without any issues. Use the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before installing the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the double glazed front door handles of the door to the edge). Check that the latch size of the new handle is in line with the measurement.

You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the latch and handle or your existing one is damaged. If you're not changing locks the new lock should fit in your existing recess and will work with the keys you have already. Be sure to choose a latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.

Removing the Cover Plate
