3 Wheeler Buggies

A three wheel pushchairs-wheeler is perfect for rough terrain providing an easy ride for your baby. They are also simpler to push and manoeuvre than a four-wheel buggy and are especially suitable for those with fabric slings or seat units that are positioned tightly in the frame to provide the best shape and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are very stable, and this makes them a great choice for off-road walking (especially when they are equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They usually have large front wheels, which cope well with bumps and kerbs as well as rough terrain. Some models have a lockable wheel in the front to give you additional stability while driving on uneven terrain.

It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have lower centers of gravity than the 4-wheeled versions which means they are more likely to fall over. They should be able of turning on a dime and be able to steer with just one hand, and have a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them perfect for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

For extremely difficult surfaces you should look for an air-filled model which are also referred to as pneumatic tyres, which are made to handle non-paved tracks and should cope with dirt, gravel, etc. A lot of all-terrain buggies have an swivelling wheel on the front which can be locked for greater stability when dealing with rough terrain.

A 3-wheeled pram is a great choice for those who run and enjoy walking fast uphill. This is especially true if you plan to connect a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It has the flat-reclining seat, 5-point harness and plenty of storage space for all your equipment (plus the ability to extend 50+ of the sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable from birth and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It can also be used for jogging with a light pace, but it's not designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a vehicle that will take on tricky terrain then you want one with large wheels. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks while providing a smooth ride for all passengers. These are also great for jogging as they come with built-in suspension and are able to climb up and down kerbs. However, they're a bit heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3 wheeled pushchair-wheel buggy is very maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels and the front wheel can be locked. It comes with air tyres which do need occasional pumping and it can be used to carry a child up to the age of 3 wheel push chair. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler loved the design of the seat and she found it easy to steer even with her 3-year-old on board.

Another great option is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, which has an adjustable handlebar and a hood made of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It's also easy to move up and down kerbs and can fit into small car boot. It can also be used as a pram with baby car seat for newborns and toddlers.

Fabric sling seats sit snugly inside the frame of the buggie rather than over it like modular seats. This design delivers a lower center of gravity that is at the ideal height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you can never overestimate how often you'll be doing this as a new parent!)

Seating

There are a variety of alternatives for seating options in 3 wheelers. The carrycot included is ideal for a baby (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lay-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older children and toddlers will appreciate the large and comfortable seat unit with adjustable ventilation. It is important to note that the seats don't recline fully, but they can be adjusted to the lowest level that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A sling seat made of fabric is also available, which is positioned snugly inside the frame, rather than sitting on top as the modular seat. This provides a lower center of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way that this style of seat dealt with these challenges.

This type of buggy comes with an enormous basket, along with other features that are useful such as an extended hood with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal and some innovative visibility lights that can be placed in front of occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy much more stable to push with one hand and also perfect for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it also means that the basket won't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.

A good quality ATP will come with a great suspension, pneumatic tyres and an ergonomic handle that is cushioned for your ease. It will accept a carrycot or car seat, which means you can use it right from birth.

The MFM reviewers noted that the 3-wheeler frames couldn't pass through their doors at home or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure to check out the dimensions of the buggy once it is folded before buying.

Find a 3-wheeler that has 2 (or 3!) seats. seats when your family grows. They are the most efficient of both and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most popular. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggy and then converted into twin buggies when your baby begins walking.

Tyres

Air filled tyres are designed to provide your child with more comfort while riding by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. They are commonly used on pushchairs such as the Phil & Ted’s Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres of the Phil & Ted's Sport made it simple for her to navigate kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and will need to have their air pressure maintained regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, so you should always have a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres are more commonly used on pushchairs since they are less expensive than air-filled tyres but are just as robust. You can tell PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also glide well on uneven and tied surfaces.

Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain of high-performance buggies. The downside of this is that the foam may expand and cause your buggy to feel less stable, because it loses its springy quality. These tyres are also noisy because they generate lots of noise when you turn and drive around the town.
