Door Handle Replacement

Door handles and hinges seem like something minor however, if you don't like the appearance of the handles or are finding them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. With a little patience, you can put in a new handle in no time.

Modern door handles are often equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive appearance. If the new handle doesn't have screws already connected, you'll need to attach them separately.

Take off the handle from the old one.

The latch plate should easily come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate.

Now, you can proceed to creating the new door strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that came with the new handles, screw the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this can cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, shut and open the door to check if it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down or forward or back until the door locks correctly.

If the door is still jiggling or moving, you may need to enlarge the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more common for older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too shallow or are not sized correctly for the latch, or due to damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure as adjusting the strike plate, but with the use of a metal file instead a chisel and hammer.

Take off the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that moves in and out of the hole in the inner edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also catches a hole on the door frame so that the door is closed. If your door wobbles when you close, a new latch may be all you need to correct the issue.

The screws that support the door latch are difficult to locate however, you can insert a screwdriver into an insignificant hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle.

If the latch is not easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle are beginning to break off. You may need to repeat this procedure several times before you are able to take the latch off.

After the old latch is removed it should be possible to slide the new latch into the slot with no issues. Use your new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is correctly positioned in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.

Before installing the new handle, make sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). You should also check whether the size of the latch on the new handle is a good match to the measurement of your existing handle.

If you're replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder has been damaged, then you will need an entirely new one. If you're not changing locks, the new latch will fit into your existing recess and will work just fine with your current keys. Pick a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match your existing double glazing handles.

Take off the cover plate

The first step in replacing an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which covers the screws and the mechanism within. Use a flathead to remove the plate. It could have an opening on one side or be secured by a pin.

Installing new screws for the door knob is necessary after the holes have been made. Choose the same size as the old screws to avoid getting the handle too tight or loose. You'll also need to install a new latch plate and strike rod that aren't included in the majority of door handle sets.
