Coding was an iterative process, where the coders listened and discussed each transcript. The coding results were then contrasted with the original RI transcripts, which provided an indication of how the RIs captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.

Refusal Interviews (RIs)

However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties they could face if they flouted the local social norms. They were concerned that their native friends would think they are "foreigners" and think they are unintelligent. This is similar to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These findings suggest that native-speakers' pragmatic norms are not the default preference for Korean learners. They may remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reassess the applicability of these tests in various cultural contexts and specific situations. This will help them better comprehend how different environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of students in the classroom and beyond. Additionally this will allow educators to create more effective methods to teach and test the korea-based pragmatics.
