Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia, you would think that the group would be prog kings and queens - but it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The band was initially a four-piece and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on place with the directive "give us a hit record or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to deliver. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into your mind. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to support it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
