How to Repair Bifold Door Top Roller Guide

If your bifold door is squeaking then it's likely that they need some maintenance. You may have to clean or lubricate them, or even adjust them. The problem may be caused by a loose screw on the top pivot or by the top roller guide.

Take the door off

It may appear complicated and difficult to install an internal set of bifold doors, but for those who are DIYers with some experience, it's actually quite easy. The frame's placement isn't a problem The trick is getting the doors to fold and close quickly and accurately. Since bifold doors are complicated machines, they might require some 'tuning' to continue working properly. It could be as simple as tightening screws or as complex as taking out the door and replacing a pivot pin or roller.

This can be caused by loose screws, holes in the anchor/pivot pins, or simply a misaligned door. The majority times this can be fixed by making a few minor adjustments. If, however, your door isn't moving at all, you may require replacing it.

To take the door off you'll need an screwdriver and perhaps two pliers (to help loosen any pins on the pivot that are stuck). The screwdriver can be used to loosen the locking levers at the bottom of the pivot bracket. The pliers are used for removing the pin.

After the top roller is free and the top roller is loose, you should be able to lift the door and swivel it down and allow you to pull it out of its pivot brackets and track. It's usually a simple process, but you must be cautious not to let the door hit the door frame. You should then be able to saw off the edge of the door that is scratching the floor, and sand it down until it is smooth. You can then repaint or refinish it as required.

This will make the guide's foot easier to remove and will prevent any damage. Be cautious when doing this because the foot is extremely sharp and could potentially cut or snag your fingers.

You may have to use some force to take the guide off, but take care not to break or chip the foot. After you've removed the old guide, remove any remaining epoxy or threads in the place where it was fixed. This will prevent future problems with the guide.
