Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band not to feature a single song with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
