The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It marks a step away from the ballads of their previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.

When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with a different producer.
