3 Wheel All Terrain PushchairWhether you're looking for a pushchair for walks in the woods or strolls on the main streets, an all terrain pushchair with a great maneuverability will be the perfect fit. These types of models are typically equipped with large wheels and suspension systems that provide an easy ride on bumpy terrain.
The majority are suitable for babies and come with a lie-flat baby seat or a newborn carrycot. They are also typically fitted with foam-filled never-flat tyres to reduce maintenance.
Suspension
A true all terrain pushchair will have good suspension which is specifically designed to be smooth on uneven ground which allows your child to feel comfortable and at ease. The wheels are usually big and puncture-proof to prevent damage from sharp rocks or sharp sticks.
Some all-terrain strollers even offer the option to switch between different tyres to suit the conditions. Certain all-terrain strollers come with a swivel wheel that can be locked to offer stability or unlocked to allow for greater maneuverability.
Certain all-terrain strollers have an adjustable brake handbrake that locks and is more accessible using your hands. This is more convenient than the traditional pedal that is located on the handlebars. This is a great feature if you are an avid climber.
If you don't want go as far as an all-terrain pushchair there are plenty of strollers available that offer excellent - but not the ultimate off-road capabilities, and have great suspension and big wheels. They are generally less expensive than full-on all terrain buggy models and can be suitable for short walks in the countryside or trips to the park.
Many of these strollers are suitable for newborns, with either an infant carrycot or a car seat that is ready for newborns. Be aware that the seats do not be able to lie flat when you push over bumps or dips. According to EU regulations, they only must meet minimum standards of reclined angles of approximately 150 degrees. Certain brands, like Graco have gotten around this with their new "comfitech" suspension in the seat that allows the seat to recline at a slightly flatter angle for a little more comfort. This feature is available on the Lila XP all-terrain pushchair which can be used with a compatible Graco infant car seat to create a
3 wheel stroller for running- in 1 travel system.
Seat
There is a variety of all-terrain pushchairs with three wheels available that provide a fantastic off-road capability. These are perfect if you reside in the countryside or walk frequently on rough, uneven terrain. These are more robust and durable than a standard pushchair. They have special features like large puncture-proof tires to withstand the most challenging surfaces. They tend to be quite wide and can be difficult to maneuver in narrow spaces or in the aisles of shops.
All-terrain buggy seats can be positioned either parent or world facing. They will grow with your child from birth to toddler. It's equipped with foam-filled 'never flat' tyres that provide a smooth ride with dual frame suspension, as well as luxurious padding in the seat unit that offers superb postural support and comfort. It features a recline feature, an enormous hood that can be extended with integrated venting, as well as an area for a smartphone.
Another great option is the new Out 'n' About Nipper V5, a pushchair that's all-terrain that is a true trailblazer with a great suspension and air-filled tyres so it can be used to jog once your child is old enough. It also comes with a 360 swivel lockable front
3 wheel tandem stroller to allow for maneuverability, and it folds with one hand, which is easy and quick. It is suitable from birth, and can be used with an adaptor for UPPAbaby's infant car seat or carrycot (sold separately).
There are a number of all-terrain strollers that do not have a reversible seat. However, the Oyster
3 wheel twin stroller, Venicci Tanum and egg 2, which offer this option, have a great weight limit as well as a robust off-road ability. A lot of pushchairs are classified as all-rounders. This includes the iCandy Pear, Bugaboo Cameleon and others. They are able to manage rough terrain in parks or National Trust locations, but don't have the off-road capabilities as true all-terrain strollers.
There are also crossover models that offer a good compromise between extreme off-road and high-street. They have big wheels, great suspension, and are built in a pushchair design, and include an option for reversible seating and a carrycot. Some of the top models are manufactured by companies such as iCandy Easywalker and Bugaboo.
Wheels
All-terrain pushchairs are essential when you live in the countryside or take your child on regular walks on rough terrain. These models typically come with larger back wheels than regular pushchairs, which makes them more adept at handling bumpy off-road terrain, and ensuring an easy ride for your child. They also have sturdy suspension and puncture-proof versions so that they're suitable for use on woodland, grass or paths through the forest, gravel tracks and market town cobbles.
Some all-terrain pushchairs also feature front wheels that lock, which provides more stability when walking on rough terrain or on high kerbs. Some models have swivel wheels at the front which allows you to move the buggy more easily if you want to change direction or turn corners.
Most all-terrain pushchairs feature air-filled tyres which offer excellent shock absorption and are perfect for tackling rough ground but they are more susceptible to punctures than EVA tyres that are used on lightweight city strollers so it's worth buying repair kits with spare tubes and a pump for your pushchair. Some all-terrain models have foam tyres that are less prone to punctures, but aren't as effective in taking in shock and could be harder to push than tyres filled with air.
The new Bugaboo Fox 5 is a great example of a child's pushchair that comes with foam-filled and air-filled tyres. It also has an excellent suspension system, and large wheels that are puncture-proof at the rear. They are ideal for off-road and jogging use (once your child is old enough). This model can also be used as a baby with a carrycot as well as an incline-flat chair.
Another alternative is the iCandy Peach All-Terrain, which comes with large tyres and one steering
3 wheel baby strollers at the front. It's not as versatile as the other all-terrain pushchairs listed on this list, but it can cope well with the terrain that is hilly and has an ample, one-handed fold which is great if you're going to use the pushchair for long walks or trips into the countryside. It is also suitable for infants and has a spacious canopy that can be extended and a movable handlebar and a large, spacious basket.
Storage
Parents who would like to take their children off-road but don't necessarily fancy tackling Ben Nevis, there are top all-terrain pushchairs that give you the best of both worlds. Look for a model with excellent all-terrain capabilities, durable suspension and large puncture-proof wheels. However, they are designed in a more traditional pushchair style with reversible seats as well as full carrycot options.
UPPAbaby's well-known Ridge all-terrain pushchair is a great example of this; it offers excellent suspension, an easy one-handed fold, and a large 10kg basket but also has features that are suitable for parents, such as an adjustable handlebar, a hand-operated brake on the right side and a large covered storage space. The hood can be taken off and washed with cool soapy-water to prevent mildew or mould.
If you're going to be using your all-terrain pushchair off-road it's a good idea to choose air-filled tyres instead of ones with rubber grips. These will provide a smoother ride over rough terrain, and make it easier to maneuver in tight spaces. If you intend to use your all-terrain pushchair to do occasional jogging, be sure the front wheel is able to swivel or has a quick release feature to ensure it is locked in place to provide more stability.
It is important to verify that the fabric of your pushchair to ensure it can be machine washed to maintain them in pristine condition. If not, a spot wash using soapy water and warm water should be sufficient. The fabric can be dried thoroughly outside to avoid mold or mildew.
The majority of our
twin 3 wheel stroller wheel pushchairs are suitable for use from birth. It is recommended to look for models with a fully flat seat and reversible backrest. This allows you to use the pushchair from the time your baby is born until the time your child is around three years old. Some are compatible with car seat adaptors for a family of three. If you'd rather leave the car at home, there are all-terrain pushchairs with a fixed front wheel which are ideal for casual strolling or jogging light like the Delta Special Needs all-terrain jogger from Delichon that is available in a variety of canvas and frame sizes that can be used by adults and children.
