The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded, and can be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are available only via a variety of ways. This is both a positive and a disadvantage.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and some new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a particular level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading further items to that same item level will cost less, even when they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

Crests

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. For instance, when an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is intended to allow players to get their equipment to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters, instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests wisely, as they have only one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the top-quality equipment that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially true for items like rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character that will be able to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
