Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to support it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before.
