BMW-2020-New.pngIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car key replacement audi will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're cheap and easy to find especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your car. It's a vital component of your audi tt replacement key's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor audikey is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas.
